The technology behind the sail
Refining the way we use wind for propulsion is an area which is constantly evolving - and with the latest in new technology, Elvstrøm Sails is at the front of the innovation.
First of all, digital design and 3D simulations have made a big impact on all aspects of sailmaking through the last 30-40 years, and secondly, new material technologies have opened new opportunities. It has made it possible to make lighter and stronger sails than before - and perhaps just as importantly, it also opens for new possibilities in terms of getting the optimum shape and the most effective design.
Elvstrøm Sails are among the pioneers of these technologies, having first made the jump to membrane sails as EPEX hit the market in 2008, and the latest step is our latest technology, XYLO. XYLO is a composite material, which utilises the materials and processes to make new progress in sail shape and strength.
