J-109 Just So fuelled by Elvstrom Sails
For maximum performance and durability, the Elvstrøm EPEX membrane was chosen as this is guaranteed against delamination, gives great longevity as well as great performance. Carbon fibre load bearing yarns were coupled with Technora yarns, for maximum shape retention, weight reduction and to reduce line loads and increase the flex in terms of sail life. Durability was further increased by the addition of Taffeta laminated into the centre during the EPEX machine process, rather than externally, which on a big sail can absorb water and consequently weight. This adds another layup and increases the overall strength and flex life of the sail too. In their first race out in light airs, Just-So beat all the other J109s by three minutes. David and Mary then scored three firsts in Class 4 JOG gaining a very respectable second overall. No 3 headsails need to be tough for tough sailing conditions, and can suffer a hard time when the crew are fighting with it on a wet, heaving deck. With this in mind, an EPEX membrane with a high count of Technora yarns was selected, which is flexible and forgiving and can withstand being stuffed down the hatch in an emergency! Rather than film on film or single Taffeta, this No 3 features Taffeta on both sides for additional confidence when the ‘dogs are blowin’ off their chains’. Just So’s No 3 also features the latest Roller Batten technology in the lower two pockets and a conventional vertical top batten. So rather than having to batten up ready for each use, now the No 3 can be stowed bagged and battened up - ready for action! We wish David and Mary a great season in 2013! |

Introducing the revolutionary FatFurl in mast furler
|
The FatFurl combines easy sail handling, whilst at the same time preserving the speed benefits and aesthetics of a conventional rig, through enabling larger sail areas to be carried in the top section of the sail, where the wind blows at its strongest. “Adopting the square top and large roach frequently seen in high performance yachts, means the FatFurl can increase the sail area of a conventional fully battened mainsail, and yet you can still furl it easily,” says Jeremy White of Elvstrøm Sails UK. Elvstrøm Sails, Europe’s biggest sailmaker, joined forces with world renowned rigging company Seldén to develop the solution for furling large square top sails, without issues of mast damage or delamination. The brand new Hallberg-Rassy 412 was the first boat to use this new technology and went on to win the Swedish Round The Island race. FatFurl sails are available through the UK loft. |

When keen round the cans and JOG sailors David and Mary McGough approached Elvstrøm Sail UK loft for a new mainsail last summer, it was decided that a Kevlar sail might be too fragile for their programme.
The ‘work horse’ of the J-109, the No 2 has the same construction as the mainsail to provide performance and durability. With extra DPI (yarn count) Just So’s No 2 has the ability to safely go over the usual top end wind range. This means the sail can be bladed out, retaining windward performance, without having to make a panic headsail change.
Elvstrøm Sails have reinvented the in-mast furling system for mainsails and introduced their latest innovation, the ‘FatFurl’ mainsail through their UK loft.
The FurlStrøm is a fantastic cruising sail with the performance of a gennaker and the handling of a genoa. It has a flat cut and a straight luff for better pointing. With no spinnaker boom needed, it comes complete with a quality furling system enabling easy handling and quick stowage by just one person.
